The purple paint on the exterior walls makes Tootsies Orchid Lounge stand out against the grey stone of the surrounding alleyway. Before it earned its current name, Hattie Louise Bess opened a place called Mom's here in nineteen sixty. A regular from the Grand Ole Opry next door once wandered in through the back alley, mistook the place for his own dressing room, and left his hat behind. Hattie eventually renamed the bar to honor that color of orchid she wore.
