The Marble Bar sits beneath the Queen Victoria Building, identifiable by its ornate, arched entrance of polished red marble and heavy brass. George Adams, the man behind Tattersalls lottery, commissioned the room in eighteen ninety-three to transform the basement of a hotel into a Victorian gentleman's retreat. It features fifty-four different types of Australian marble, gold leaf ceilings, and large oil paintings of semi-nude figures. Adams spared no expense, spending thirty-two thousand pounds to create his opulent underground escape from the city.
