The low-slung, cream-colored facade of Franconia sits on a sharp corner of Macleay Street, holding a design that breaks from the ornate Victorian terraces nearby. Built in nineteen twenty-eight, it serves as a distinct example of the interwar functionalist style, stripped back and geometric. Architect Samuel Lipson used the site to create an apartment block that prioritized ventilation and light. Long ago, it became a home for artists and writers, including the poet Kenneth Slessor, who lived behind these walls for years.
