Inukshuk

A jagged, human-like stack of granite blocks stands near the water, balanced without mortar. This is an Inukshuk, a traditional Inuit structure used for centuries as a wayfinding marker across the treeless Arctic landscape. The version here was built by artist Alvin Kanak for the Expo eighty-six world fair. While its ancestors served as navigational aids or hunting caches, this stone figure became a permanent marker of welcome and connection for the city, facing out toward the harbor and the mountains beyond.
