The Laff

food drink

The Laff, officially known as the Chateau Lafayette, is the oldest tavern in Ottawa. It is easily recognized by the faded, mustard-colored paint on its brick exterior and the simple, weathered sign hanging above the entrance. It has served drinks in this exact spot since eighteen forty-nine. Before the market grew up around it, the building served as a staging ground for travelers and laborers, holding its ground through a massive fire in nineteen oh one that leveled much of the neighborhood.
