Écluse Bayard

The Écluse Bayard marks a sharp drop in the level of the Canal du Midi, recognizable by the lock keeper's house standing right against the water. Built in the late seventeenth century, it remains the last lock in Toulouse before the canal meets the Garonne River. When Pierre-Paul Riquet designed this passage, he had to navigate the city’s dense layout. He forced the canal through these tight quarters, leaving this stone lock to handle the final descent toward the river basin.
