Pont Neuf

The Pont Neuf in Toulouse is built from brick and stone, marked by seven irregular arches of varying widths that span the Garonne River. Despite the name meaning New Bridge, it is the oldest bridge in the city. Construction began in fifteen forty-four, but floods and funding shortages stalled the work for nearly a century. When King Henry the Fourth finally inaugurated the structure in sixteen thirty-two, the builders had designed the piers with triangular cutwaters to let the river flow safely through during high water.
