Hôtel de Clary / Hôtel de Pierre

The Hotel de Clary wears a coat of reddish brick and features a grand arched doorway topped by stone busts of the Roman emperors. Francois de Clary, a wealthy lawyer and president of the local parliament, built this townhouse in the early seventeenth century. He commissioned the stone carvings to advertise his status and legal mastery. During the French Revolution, those stone emperors faced vandalism, but the intricate facade remains one of the most recognizable examples of Renaissance architecture in Toulouse.
