The house at twenty-eight Rue des Marchands features a distinct, rounded stone corner that anchors the structure against the narrow medieval street. Built in the sixteenth century, this mansion served as the residence for Pierre d’Assézat, a wealthy merchant who made his fortune trading woad, the blue dye plant that brought immense prosperity to Toulouse. He hired the architect Nicolas Bachelier to design a home reflecting his stature, complete with an elaborate courtyard and carved loggias that remain visible through the heavy wooden doors.
