A narrow, stone-faced building on Rue des Filatiers stands out for its sign, which displays a large, painted wooden barrel over the doorway. Au Père Louis has operated as a wine shop and tavern since eighteen forty-five. During the nineteenth century, the owner, Louis, kept his wine in the deep, medieval vaults beneath the floorboards. Students from the nearby university filled the cramped space every evening, trading coins for a glass of local Sud-Ouest wine poured directly from those subterranean casks.
