Place Joseph Sitruk

You are standing at Place Joseph Sitruk, a small square in Neuilly-sur-Seine named for a significant religious and community leader. This site was formally dedicated in May two thousand eighteen to honor the memory of Joseph Sitruk, who served as the Chief Rabbi of France for over twenty years. He was born in Tunisia in nineteen forty-four and became a prominent figure in French Jewish life, known for his charisma and his efforts to revitalize Jewish identity and practice across the country. Neuilly-sur-Seine was his longtime home, and it was in this very neighborhood that he founded the Alef Center in the nineteen nineties, a place dedicated to spiritual study and education that still operates nearby today. The square itself sits at the intersection of Rue Beffroy and Rue Ybry and was chosen by the local municipality to recognize his role as a bridge-builder who engaged deeply with both his community and the French Republic.
