Parc de L'Ile de la Jatte

The Parc de L'Ile de la Jatte sits on a narrow strip of land in the Seine that once served as a private garden for the French royal family. In the early nineteenth century, King Louis Philippe owned the island while residing at the nearby Château de Neuilly. He famously moved a neoclassical structure known as the Temple of Mars from the center of Paris to the northern tip of the island, where it was rechristened the Temple of Love. This royal retreat eventually gave way to the public leisure spot that exists today, though you can still sense the island's history as an exclusive sanctuary as you walk along its banks.
