The Impératrice Eugénie Garden in the twelfth arrondissement features a dense collection of exotic plants and winding paths that mimic the English landscaping style favored during the Second Empire. It occupies land once reserved for the private leisure of Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon the Third. She commissioned the garden to create a secluded botanical retreat within the city. During its early years, gardeners maintained a strict collection of rare ferns and imported trees that the Empress personally selected for the grounds.
