Théâtre national de la Colline

The Théâtre national de la Colline sits behind a severe, geometric facade of red brick and glass that stands apart from the surrounding Haussmann architecture. It occupies the former site of the Théâtre de l'Est parisien, which burned down in nineteen seventy-one. Architect Valentin Fabre designed the current structure to house a venue dedicated exclusively to contemporary drama. In nineteen eighty-eight, director Jorge Lavelli opened the stage here with a focus on living playwrights, rejecting the classics that dominate most other Parisian theaters.
