Paris Sewer Museum

The entrance to the Paris Sewer Museum is a small, unassuming building near the Pont de l'Alma. Below the metal grates and cobblestones, a vast, complex network of tunnels carries the city's waste. Eugène Belgrand designed this system in the nineteenth century, transforming Paris from a place of frequent cholera outbreaks into a modern capital. Workers still maintain these tunnels today, walking through the same stone arched corridors where writer Victor Hugo once found inspiration for his epic novel, Les Misérables.
