The Cheminée du Front de Seine rises over one hundred and thirty meters above the Grenelle neighborhood, a slender concrete cylinder painted in horizontal stripes of green and beige. Originally built in the nineteen seventies to vent the heating system for the entire Front de Seine apartment complex, it serves as a massive industrial exhaust pipe. During the cold winter of nineteen eighty-four, the facility nearly shut down, leaving thousands of residents scrambling for heat as the boiler room struggled to keep up with demand.
