The Bateau-Lavoir sits on the Place Émile-Goudeau with a facade of faded, weathered wood and shuttered windows. This studio building earned its name from a laundry boat docked on the Seine, which the structure resembled to poet Max Jacob. In the early nineteen hundreds, Pablo Picasso occupied a cramped, unheated studio here. He painted Les Demoiselles d'Avignon within these walls, working by the light of a kerosene lamp while rats scurried across his floorboards.
