Clos Montmartre

The Clos Montmartre is a small vineyard tucked behind the Musée de Montmartre, marked by orderly rows of Gamay and Pinot Noir vines that cling to the steep northern slope of the hill. It occupies the site of a former orchard and farmhouse once owned by the painter Auguste Renoir. After urban development erased most of the neighborhood’s historic farmland in the early twentieth century, local residents successfully petitioned to plant these vines in nineteen thirty-three to protect the land from housing developers.
