Les Artistes de la Place du Tertre

The Place du Tertre holds a crowd of easels where painters stand today, just as they did after the Second World War. When the city granted these artists legal permission to set up shop in nineteen forty-five, the square shifted from a simple village gathering spot to an open-air studio. Each artist occupies a tiny, painted plot marked by a number on the ground. A committee now assigns these spots, and only a select few painters earn the right to work here permanently.
