The space sits on the former site of a mansion belonging to the Chevalier de la Barre, a young nobleman executed in seventeen sixty-six for failing to salute a religious procession. Parisians later installed this statue of him here to commemorate his struggle against what they considered unjust clerical authority. Today, the park serves as a local gathering spot for neighborhood residents.
