Monument to Alexandre Dumas

The monument to Alexandre Dumas in the Place du Général-Catroux features the author seated in bronze, looking down at his own characters. Gustave Doré sculpted him, but the pedestal holds a surprise. A bronze statue of d'Artagnan sits at the base, sword drawn, representing the hero of The Three Musketeers. During the German occupation in nineteen forty-two, the Nazis melted down the d'Artagnan figure for scrap metal. The city replaced it with a new casting in nineteen fifty-five, restoring the author's companions.
