Sainte-Marie des Batignolles

Sainte-Marie des Batignolles features a tall, pedimented portico supported by four massive Corinthian columns that rise directly above the sidewalk. Construction began in eighteen twenty-six after King Charles the Tenth granted the land to provide a parish for the growing village of Batignolles. While the city of Paris later annexed the area, the church remains a holdover from when this was a separate, independent commune. Residents fought hard to fund its completion, which dragged on for years until eighteen fifty-one.
