Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Consolation

religious

The Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Consolation is marked by its slender, white stone spire rising above the surrounding apartment blocks. This chapel occupies the exact site of the Bazar de la Charité, a temporary charity bazaar that burned to the ground in eighteen ninety-seven. Over one hundred people, mostly women from the Parisian aristocracy, died when the building collapsed during the fire. Duchess Sophie Charlotte of Bavaria refused to leave her post as a patron until others were saved, dying amidst the flames.
