The Maison pompéienne sits behind a tall, austere wall on Avenue Montaigne, marked by a massive iron gate. Built in eighteen sixty for Prince Jérôme Napoléon, this villa was a precise replica of a house from ancient Pompeii, down to the mosaic floors and painted frescoes. The Prince wanted a place to entertain his guests with elaborate, themed parties. Guests once arrived to find staff dressed in Roman tunics serving wine in clay cups while music played on reproductions of antique harps.
