While it now serves as a rigorous academic institution, the site originally housed a convent before the city claimed the land for public education in the eighteen eighties. Jules Ferry himself pushed for this transformation, believing that a secular schoolhouse should occupy the space of former religious cloisters to bring free, mandatory instruction to the heart of the district.
