The Théâtre L'Echangeur occupies a former industrial transformer station in Bagnolet. Its most striking feature is a stark, functional concrete frame that creates an unexpected stage for contemporary performance. In the nineteen eighties, the building served as a site for electricity distribution, housing heavy equipment to power the neighborhood. The facility fell into disuse until artists converted the shell into a space for experimental theater. Today, the rough, unadorned walls host artists who specifically seek out the building’s heavy, cavernous acoustics.
