The Parisian cemetery of Pantin is the largest active burial ground in all of France. It spans over one hundred and seven hectares, an area more than twice the size of the more famous Pere Lachaise cemetery in central Paris. Its scale reflects the massive urban expansion of the late nineteenth century, when the capital faced an urgent need for space beyond its city walls. Since its opening in eighteen eighty-six, over one million people have been laid to rest here, with thousands of interments continuing to occur every year.
