The Cimetière parisien de Pantin stretches out behind a low, unassuming perimeter wall, holding over two hundred thousand graves in a vast grid of gravel paths. It is the largest cemetery in Paris by land area. When it opened in eighteen eighty-six, the city was running out of burial space within the old walls. City planners bought this land to accommodate the growing population, specifically for those who could not afford the expensive private plots in the heart of the city.
