The Commonwealth War Graves plot in the Courtillieres cemetery in Pantin holds forty-one burials from the First World War. Among the headstones, you find the grave of Private Charles William Dally of the Royal Fusiliers, who died in October nineteen eighteen at age twenty-one. His father, a London postman, chose the inscription at the base of the stone: A bitter grief, a shock severe, to part with one we loved so dear. The plot remains a permanent, manicured quiet among the rows.
