The DenkRaum Sophienkirche features a stark, modern steel frame that reconstructs the silhouette of the former Sophienkirche’s gothic choir. Built on the footprint of the original church, this structure serves as an open memorial for a building leveled by the East German government in nineteen sixty-eight. In the final days before the demolition, workers found a collection of thousands of letters and documents hidden in the church floor, revealing centuries of local history that the regime intended to erase.
