Historisches Grünes Gewölbe

The Historisches Grünes Gewölbe features an array of heavy, ornate iron doors that guard a sequence of rooms filled with gold, ivory, and gemstones. Augustus the Strong established this treasure chamber in the eighteenth century to display his collection of curiosities and state wealth. During the Second World War, the vaults were stripped and the contents moved to a fortress, leaving the rooms gutted by fire. Restorers spent years rebuilding the interior to match the original baroque inventory, reopening it in two thousand six.
