Museum of Dresden Romanticism

The Museum of Dresden Romanticism sits behind a distinctive yellow facade on the Neumarkt, recognizable by the weathered stone portal that survived the city's destruction. This house belonged to the painter Gerhard von Kügelgen. In the early nineteenth century, his home became a gathering place for writers like Caspar David Friedrich and Heinrich von Kleist. They spent their evenings here discussing the soul and the mysteries of nature. Kügelgen himself was murdered on the road to his studio just outside the city in eighteen twenty.
