Moritz Monument - oldest preserved monument in Dresden - (1555; Hans Walther)

The Moritz Monument stands as a heavy, weathered slab of sandstone, carved with the image of Elector Moritz of Saxony in full armor. It dates to fifteen fifty-five, making it the oldest monument in Dresden. Hans Walther created it to honor the Elector, who died in battle just two years earlier. The stone depicts Moritz kneeling before a crucifix, a quiet contrast to the violent end he met during the Battle of Sievershausen, where a bullet finally took his life.
