The facade of the Societaetstheater displays a plain, butter-yellow coat of paint, but the heavy, arched doorway marks the oldest theater in Dresden. Founded in seventeen seventy-six, the building served as a social club for the local bourgeoisie. During the Napoleonic Wars, the theater functioned as a makeshift hospital for soldiers wounded in the Battle of Dresden. Friedrich Schiller even visited the club to meet with friends. Today, it remains a venue for independent theater and dance performances in the Neustadt.
