Cathedral St. Trinitatis

The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity features a jagged, ornate silhouette crowned by seventy-eight oversized stone saints perched along its roofline. Augustus the Strong commissioned this Catholic cathedral for a city that had long embraced the Reformation, intending it to serve his royal court and secure his claim to the Polish throne. When the architect Gaetano Chiaveri arrived from Rome, he spent years battling the stubborn, marshy ground along the Elbe River, eventually sinking thousands of oak piles into the mud to hold the weight.
