Johanneum (1872-76; Karl Moritz Haenel)

The Johanneum features a distinctive, long neo-Renaissance facade punctuated by a repeating series of arched windows. It occupies the former site of the royal stables, built in the sixteenth century to house the horses and carriages of the Saxon electors. In the eighteen seventies, architect Karl Moritz Haenel redesigned the structure into the municipal historical museum. He retained the massive ramp once used to lead horses to the upper floor, which now serves as a central feature for visitors entering the building.
