Coselpalais (1762-64, Julius Heinrich Schwarze)

The Coselpalais carries a heavy, ornate facade with its mansard roof looming over the corner of the block. Julius Heinrich Schwarze built this townhouse for a military officer in seventeen sixty-four, but it carries the name of Countess Cosel, the famous mistress of Augustus the Strong. She actually died decades before the stone was even laid. The countess left a ghost story behind, and the city attached her name to this grand residence to keep her memory cemented in Dresden stone.
