Residenzschloss

The Residenzschloss features a rugged, blackened exterior of mismatched stone that reveals centuries of repeated destruction and reconstruction. This sprawling complex served as the seat of the Electors and Kings of Saxony for over four hundred years. During the final months of the second world war, firebombs gutted the palace, leaving behind a hollowed shell. Architects eventually spent decades meticulously piecing the masonry back together, sometimes leaving the original, fire-scarred blocks exposed alongside fresh stone to mark the scars of the past.
