British Artillery Monument

The British Artillery Monument is a stone pillar rising from a small, fenced enclosure near the ruins of the Kashmere Gate. It commemorates the men of the Bengal Artillery who died during the eighteen fifty-seven uprising. Lieutenant Edward Thackeray and his men held this ground against heavy fire to defend the city magazine, eventually blowing it up to keep the ammunition from falling into rebel hands. The blast destroyed the building but stopped the advance, and the monument marks their final positions.
