The Fatehpuri Masjid stands out for its red sandstone facade and its single, bulbous dome, which marks the western end of Chandni Chowk. Built in sixteen fifty, it was commissioned by Fatehpuri Begum, one of the wives of Emperor Shah Jahan. During the uprising of eighteen fifty-seven, the British seized the mosque and auctioned it to a merchant named Lala Chunna Mal. For years, it served as a private residence until the government bought it back in eighteen seventy-seven to restore its religious function.
