Telegraph Memorial

The Telegraph Memorial stands as a tapered sandstone obelisk inside the Kashmere Gate area. It commemorates the British telegraph operators who held their position during the eighteen fifty-seven uprising. As rebel forces neared, these clerks stayed at their instruments to send the warning to Ambala, a message that allowed the British to mobilize their counterattack. Most of the men who tapped out those final alerts died in the room before reinforcements arrived. The obelisk marks the site where that transmission occurred.
