Darbhanga Ghat, (Varanasi)

Darbhanga Ghat stands out for its massive, imposing stone columns that rise directly from the riverbank, looking more like a European palace than a traditional bathing ghat. Built by the royal family of Darbhanga in the early twentieth century, it was meant to serve as a regal residence for pilgrims of status visiting the city. The architect designed the structure to project power and permanence, intentionally using neoclassical lines that contrast sharply with the weathered, chaotic sandstone steps found elsewhere along the Ganges.
