Ratneshwar Mahadev Temple Varanasi

The Ratneshwar Mahadev Temple sits noticeably lower than the surrounding ghats, its shikhara leaning at a distinct, sharp angle toward the Ganges. While most temples in Varanasi reach toward the sky, this structure sunk into the soft silt of the riverbank shortly after its construction in the nineteenth century. Its foundation failed to hold against the weight of the masonry, leaving the temple permanently tilted. The sanctum remains submerged under river water for several months every year during the monsoon season.
