Sankatha Ghat is recognizable by the massive, weathered stone lion statue standing guard near the water’s edge. This ghat takes its name from the nearby temple dedicated to Sankatha Devi, the goddess of danger, who is worshipped by travelers seeking protection. In eighteen twenty-five, a wealthy merchant from the state of Odisha provided the funds to rebuild the stone steps into the river, transforming the landing. Sailors and river traders often stop here to pray for safe passage before navigating the unpredictable currents of the Ganges.
