Raja Ghat is defined by a pair of massive, weathered stone elephants that stand guard at the top of its broad stairs. Built in the seventeen twenties by the Maratha ruler Bajirao Peshwa, the ghat served as a vital landing point for pilgrims arriving in Varanasi from the Deccan region. These pilgrims brought their own architectural styles and cultural traditions to the riverfront, making this site a distinct bridge between southern Indian heritage and the ancient customs of this city.
