Dashashwamedh Ghat

Dashashwamedh Ghat is defined by the massive, multi-tiered stone platforms that descend directly into the Ganges, crowded with small wooden altars and bright marigold garlands. Hindu tradition says Lord Brahma performed ten horse sacrifices here to welcome Shiva back to earth. In seventeen forty-eight, the Maratha ruler Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao rebuilt the masonry steps. Every single evening, priests conduct a fire ceremony here, swinging multi-tiered brass lamps in synchronized patterns while thousands of spectators watch from the stone steps and anchored wooden boats.
