Chousatti Ghat

religious

The sixty-four steps of Chousatti Ghat lead directly into the Ganges, marked by a massive stone temple dedicated to the goddess Chousatti Devi. King Digpatiya of Bengal built the original structure in the seventeenth century to serve as a refuge for scholars and poets. The temple interior houses a fierce image of the goddess, said to grant protection to those who recite sacred verses on these stairs. Pilgrims arrive here during the festival of Chaitra to seek blessings from the sixty-four manifestations of the deity.
