Dandi Ghat, (Varanasi)

Dandi Ghat is distinguished by the massive, carved stone pillar that stands near the water's edge, draped in marigolds. It serves as a home for the Dandi Sannyasis, a sect of ascetic monks who carry a sacred staff, or danda, as their primary symbol. In nineteen thirty-one, Mahatma Gandhi met with local scholars here to discuss his ongoing struggle against colonial rule. The site remains a quiet space for meditation, kept apart from the intense, public cremation rituals that define the neighboring riverfront stairs.
