Niranjani Ghat

Niranjani Ghat features a long, continuous stretch of stone steps that disappear directly into the water of the Ganges. Built in the late eighteenth century, the ghat takes its name from the Niranjani Akhara, one of the oldest orders of ascetic monks in India. These monks established their headquarters here, turning the riverside into a private space for their rigorous physical training and spiritual discipline. The heavy stone buildings lining the top of the steps remain the center of their monastic life today.
