Ahilyabai Ghat, (Varanasi)

The Ahilyabai Ghat features a distinct, weathered stone facade lined with small, carved shrines that remain partially submerged during the monsoon season. Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore commissioned this structure in seventeen seventy-eight to provide a bathing site for Hindu pilgrims. She chose this location specifically to integrate her project into the existing riverside architecture of Varanasi. When the ghat was finished, she maintained it through a dedicated endowment, ensuring that the stone steps remained accessible for daily ritual ablutions.
